Translation as Text is the direct successor of the volume Text and Translation, published as Uebersetzungswissenschaftliche Beitraege 8 in 1985. Positive response to the original monograph and its successful use as a reference in advanced translation classes in Germany and other countries encouraged us to extensively revise the volume and add new material. We have attempted to clarify the theoretical position and methodological assumptions that were implicit in the earlier version. A new first chapter places the volume in the context of the variety of modern approaches to translation. The monograph describes translation studies as the empirical study of the relationships among translator, the process of translation, and the text

Why this book?

To build the competence we want in our students we have to design precise
pedagogical tools – tools for particular purposes that will yield specific desired
effects. Shreve 1995: xiv

Compared to the literature on translation theory, on the best way to translate a text or on how to become a professional translator, publications on translation training per se are scarce. Most of these follow a teacher-centred approach to classroom dynamics with a bias towards teaching translation starting off with professional standards.

This work considers the impact of technology on our command of (foreign) languages, and the effects that our (lack of) linguistic skills have on technology, even though modern communications technology implies mulitlingualism, yet at the same time paves the way for the development of a "lingua franca". The challenges are not only industrial, political, social administrative, judicial, ethical; they are also cultural and linguistic. This volume is a collection of essays and the edited results of some of the presentations and debates from two international forums on the subject

Machine Translation: Its Scope and Limits

Author: Yorick Wilks
Publisher: Springer
File size: 3 MB
File type: pdf

Machine Translation (MT) is both an engineering technology and a measure of all things to do with languages and computers—whenever a new theory of language or linguistics is offered, an important criteria for its success is whether or not it will improve machine translation.

This book presents a history of machine translation (MT) from the point of view of a major writer and innovator in the subject. It describes and contrasts a range of approaches to the challenges and problems of this remarkable technology by means of a combination of historic papers along with commentaries to update their significance, both at the time of their writing and now. This volume chronicles the evolution of conflicting approaches to MT towards a somewhat skeptical consensus on future progress. Also included is a discussion of the most recent developments in the field and prospects for the future, which have been much changed by the arrival of the World Wide Web

Translation in Global News

Author: Bassnett/Bielsa
Publisher: Routledge
File size: 1.39 Mb
File type: Rar'd PDF

The mass media are of paramount importance in the formulation and transmission of messages about key developments of global significance, such as terrorism and the war in Iraq, yet the key mediating role of translation in the reception of speeches and addresses of figures like Osama Bin Laden and Saddam Hussein has remained largely invisible.

Incorporating the results of extensive fieldwork in key global news organizations such as Reuters, Agence France Press and Inter Press Service, this book addresses central issues relating to the new pressures on translation arising from globalization, analyzing new texts from major news agencies as well as alternative media organisations. Written by a leading figure in the field of literature and of translation studies, this book presents close readings of different English versions of key Arabic texts circulated in Western media to demonstrate the ways in which a cultural and religious Other is framed in different media

1811 Dictionary Of The Vulgar Tongue

Publisher: Evergreen Review

1811 Dictionary Of The Vulgar Tongue
The merit of Captain Grose's Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue has been long and universally acknowledged. But its circulation was confined almost exclusively to the lower orders of society: he was not aware, at the time of its compilation, that our young men of fashion would at no very distant period be as distinguished for the vulgarity of their jargon as the inhabitants of Newgate; and he therefore conceived it superfluous to incorporate with his work the few examples of fashionable slang that might occur to his observation.

Book Description
"Bite the bullet", " get on the stick", "make no bones about it", " take the cake". The American Heritage(R) Dictionary of Idioms covers almost 10,000 expressions. Its main fare is, of course, idioms - groups of two or more words that together mean something different from the literal meaning of the individual words. In addition, this book discusses verb phrases such as " act up", "freeze out", and " get down", figures of speech such as "dark horse" and "blind as a bat", interjections and formulas like "says who" and " tough beans", common proverbs like a "bird in the hand", and slang terms such as "buy the farm" and "push up daisies". Each entry is defined and has an example sentence showing the expression in context. Most entries offer an explanation of the expression's literal meaning or origin and include information about its first appearance in English

The author
The book has six chapters and investigates a variety of forms of translation. My intent with this variety was to underline that the translation process is not simply a relationship between a source text and a target text, or a translator and an author, but is a central meeting point for a mixture of relationships that are textually, culturally or personally bound.

This dictionary presents a complete listing of the collocations in the Brown Corpus, which is the standard American corpus containing one million words of text from many different genres dating from 1961. Collocations, as defined by the author, are recurring sequences of grammatically well-formed items. They make up the building blocks of the native speaker's mental lexicon and hence are an essential element of linguistic competence. Examples of collocations are: at the outset, could be expected to, not significantly different from, peaceful coexistence, powdered coffee, and with great difficulty. The dictionary lists some 85,000 collocational types; for each collocation there are statistics showing its frequency, distribution, and degree of prominence. It will be an invaluable reference source for researchers in linguistics, English-language teaching, lexicography, stylistics, and automatic language analysis.

the_oxford_dictionary_of_modern_quotations

Author: Tony Augarde (Editor)
Publisher: Oxford University Press
File size: 2.12 MB
File type: PDF; txt

In this dictionary, "modern" is defined as 20th century; thus, entries are quotes originating from
people alive after 1900. If the speaker was also quotable before 1900, those remarks are included as well. Using the same format as The Oxford Dictionary of Quotations (Oxford Univ. Pr., 1979. 3d ed.), this book consists of some 5000 quotations from a wide range of sources: arrangement is alphabetical by the names of the authors, and each quotation includes a reference to a printed source. The index, nearly half as long as the text itself, provides quick and easy access to quotations by keywords. Some of the authors included here are also represented in The Oxford Dictionary of Quotations. In many of these cases, however, the newer title attributes even more quotations per author. There are a number of quotations given first in their original (non-English) language, followed by an English translation. Song, book, and movie titles are also represented.
Recommended as a companion volume to the earlier Oxford title and a worthy addition to that often-used shelf in any reference collection.

The Oxford Thesaurus: An A-Z Dictionary of Synonyms

Author: Laurence Urdang
Publisher: OUP (1994)
File size: 3.6 MB
File type: pdf

This is the first comprehensive thesaurus of current English published by Oxford University Press. Headwords are readily found in an A-Z listing, and a full synonym index enables readers to find synonyms which are not also headwords.

The Oxford Thesaurus emphasises current English, but includes enough quaint terms and plenty of regional, idiomatic and slang terms in English from around the world to provide colourful options. Most entries provide sample sentences, but the bulk of the tome is composed of synonyms (with antonyms--added for this second edition--for contrast), so you needn't wade through lots of excess verbiage when what you really want is the phrase that says what you have in mind, with the right tone and flair. The Oxford Thesaurus makes it effortless. --Stephanie Gold
