Translation as Text is the direct successor of the volume Text and Translation, published as Uebersetzungswissenschaftliche Beitraege 8 in 1985. Positive response to the original monograph and its successful use as a reference in advanced translation classes in Germany and other countries encouraged us to extensively revise the volume and add new material. We have attempted to clarify the theoretical position and methodological assumptions that were implicit in the earlier version. A new first chapter places the volume in the context of the variety of modern approaches to translation. The monograph describes translation studies as the empirical study of the relationships among translator, the process of translation, and the text

Why this book?
To build the competence we want in our students we have to design precise
pedagogical tools – tools for particular purposes that will yield specific desired
effects. Shreve 1995: xiv
Compared to the literature on translation theory, on the best way to
translate a text or on how to become a professional translator,
publications on translation training per se are scarce. Most of these
follow a teacher-centred approach to classroom dynamics with a bias
towards teaching translation starting off with professional standards.

Translation and film adaptation of theatre have received little study. In filling that gap, this book draws on the experiences of theatrical translators and on movie versions of plays from various countries. It also offers insights into such concerns as the translation of bilingual plays and the choice between subtitling and dubbing of film

This book presents a history of machine translation (MT) from the point of view of a major writer and innovator in the subject. It describes and contrasts a range of approaches to the challenges and problems of this remarkable technology by means of a combination of historic papers along with commentaries to update their significance, both at the time of their writing and now. This volume chronicles the evolution of conflicting approaches to MT towards a somewhat skeptical consensus on future progress. Also included is a discussion of the most recent developments in the field and prospects for the future, which have been much changed by the arrival of the World Wide Web

The mass media are of paramount importance in the formulation and transmission of messages about key developments of global significance, such as terrorism and the war in Iraq, yet the key mediating role of translation in the reception of speeches and addresses of figures like Osama Bin Laden and Saddam Hussein has remained largely invisible.
Incorporating the results of extensive fieldwork in key global news organizations such as Reuters, Agence France Press and Inter Press Service, this book addresses central issues relating to the new pressures on translation arising from globalization, analyzing new texts from major news agencies as well as alternative media organisations. Written by a leading figure in the field of literature and of translation studies, this book presents close readings of different English versions of key Arabic texts circulated in Western media to demonstrate the ways in which a cultural and religious Other is framed in different media

This introductory textbook provides an accessible overview of the key contributions to translation theory. Munday explores each theory chapter-by-chapter and tests the different approaches by applying them to texts. The texts discussed are taken from a broad range of languages - English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Punjabi, Portuguese and Spanish - and English translations are provided. A wide variety of text types is analysed, including a tourist brochure, a children's cookery book, a Harry Potter novel, the Bible, literary reviews and translators' prefaces, film translation, a technical text and a European Parliament speech. Each chapter includes the following features: * a table introducing key concepts * an introduction outlining the translation theory or theories * illustrative texts with translations * a chapter summary * discussion points and exercises. Including a general introduction, an extensive bibliography, and websites for further information, this is a practical, user-friendly textbook that gives a balanced and comprehensive insight into translation studies

Synopsis
This text provides a snapshot of issues reflecting the changing nature of translation studies at the beginning of a new millennium. Resulting from discussions between translation theorists from all over the world, topics covered include: the nature of translation; English as a "lingua franca"; public service translation and interpreting; assessment; and audio-visual translation. The first part of the work covers a discussion stimulated by Peter Newmark's paper, and the second part allows invited colleagues to develop his topics.

Book Description
"Bite the bullet", " get on the stick", "make no bones about it", " take the cake". The American Heritage(R) Dictionary of Idioms covers almost 10,000 expressions. Its main fare is, of course, idioms - groups of two or more words that together mean something different from the literal meaning of the individual words. In addition, this book discusses verb phrases such as " act up", "freeze out", and " get down", figures of speech such as "dark horse" and "blind as a bat", interjections and formulas like "says who" and " tough beans", common proverbs like a "bird in the hand", and slang terms such as "buy the farm" and "push up daisies". Each entry is defined and has an example sentence showing the expression in context. Most entries offer an explanation of the expression's literal meaning or origin and include information about its first appearance in English

The author
The book has six chapters and investigates a variety of forms of translation. My intent with this variety was to underline that the translation process is not simply a relationship between a source text and a target text, or a translator and an author, but is a central meeting point for a mixture of relationships that are textually, culturally or personally bound.

In this dictionary, "modern" is defined as 20th century; thus, entries are quotes originating from people alive after 1900. If the speaker was also quotable before 1900, those remarks are included as well. Using the same format as The Oxford Dictionary of Quotations (Oxford Univ. Pr., 1979. 3d ed.), this book consists of some 5000 quotations from a wide range of sources: arrangement is alphabetical by the names of the authors, and each quotation includes a reference to a printed source. The index, nearly half as long as the text itself, provides quick and easy access to quotations by keywords. Some of the authors included here are also represented in The Oxford Dictionary of Quotations. In many of these cases, however, the newer title attributes even more quotations per author. There are a number of quotations given first in their original (non-English) language, followed by an English translation. Song, book, and movie titles are also represented.
Recommended as a companion volume to the earlier Oxford title and a worthy addition to that often-used shelf in any reference collection.
